If You Ask Questions

LESSON 3

READING is all about words or word-groups that answer one of these questions:
WHO? — WHOM? — WHERE? — WHEN? — WHY? — WHAT? — HOW? or HOW MUCH? — WHICH?

NOTICE: Word-groups are usually said in ONE BREATH, without PAUSING.
You are given help in the odd numbered sentences (1, 3, 5, ...), but you need to answer the question in the even numbered sentences (2, 4, 6, ...) on you own. Click on to check your results.

  1. THEY came for diner. WHO came? THEY did.

  2. WE WENT THERE TO PLAY. WHAT did we go there to do?
WHERE did they go?

  3. OUR CLASS IS GOING. WHO IS GOING? OUR CLASS.
WHAT is the class doing? IS GOING.

  4. Dad paid them THOUSANDS for the house. HOW much did dad pay them?
WHOM did dad pay?
WHAT did dad pay them for?

  5. It costs FIFTH DOLLARS. HOW MUCH did it cost? FIFTY DOLLARS.

  6. The GOLF BALL went into the hole. WHAT went into the hole?
WHERE did the golfball go?

  7. The golf ball is IN THE WATER. WHERE is the golf ball? IN THE WATER.

  8. SHE HIT HIM. WHOM did she hit?
WHO hit him?

  9. The ball IN THE HOLE is mine. WHICH ball is mine? The one IN THE HOLE.

10. MARY OPENED the DOOR. WHO OPENED the door?
WHAT did Mary do?

11. I MET HER. WHO met her? I did.
WHAT did I do? MET her.
WHOM did I met? HER.

12. He had to read 4 books FOR CLASS. WHY did he have to read 4 books?

13. I MOVED TO LET HIM PASS. WHO moved? I did.
WHAT did I do? I MOVED.
WHY did I move? TO LET HIM PASS.

14. The BIKE was broken. WHAT was broken?

15. HE had to leave to CATCH THE PLANE. WHY did he have to leave? To CATCH THE PLANE.

16. BECAUSE THE COWS ARE IN THE CORN, BOY BLUE must blow his horn. WHY must boy blue blow his horn?

17. BECAUSE THE SHEEP ARE IN THE MEADOW, BOY BLUE must blow his HORN. WHY must boy blue blow his horn? I did.
WHAT did I do? BECAUSE THE SHEEP ARE IN THE MEADOW.
WHAT must he blow? HIS HORN.

18. The SHEEP are IN THE CORN too. WHERE are the sheep?
WHAT is also in the corn?
