If You Ask Questions

LESSON 1

Every word (like JOHN or EATS or GIRL) or word-group (like AT SCHOOL or IN MY SEAT or IN OUR HOUSE or WHEN I GO or WHO IS MY MOTHER or WHERE I LIVE) answers one of these questions:

WHO? — WHOM? — WHERE? — WHEN? — WHY? — WHAT? — HOW? or HOW MUCH? — WHICH?

 

READ the following sentences, and answer the questions. Click on to check your results.

  1. MARY is singing. WHO is singing? MARY
  2. MY SISTER Mary is singing. WHICH Mary is singing?
  3. The girls IN MY CLASS are singing. WHICH girls? IN MY CLASS
  4. I gave it TO BOB. WHOM did you give it to? TO BOB
  5. I am going TO SCHOOL. WHERE? TO SCHOOL

 

NOTICE: When you say word-groups like IN MY CLASS and TO BOB and TO SCHOOL you say or run the words together without having to Pause. In the follwoing sentences SAY all word-groups aloud—almost in one breath:
  6. School starts At NOON. WHEN? AT NOON
  7. BIRDS fly high. WHAT flies high? BIRDS
  8. REV. SMITH is our pastor. WHO is our pastor? REV. SMITH
  9. SHEEP are in the MEADOW. WHAT are in the meadow? SHEEP
10. And COWS are IN THE CORN. WHAT are in the corn? COWS
11. The boy ON THE LEFT is Paul. WHICH BOY is Paul? ON THE LEFT
12. They go to school TO LEARN. WHY do they go to school? TO LEARN
13. I left BECAUSE OF THE NOISE. WHY did I leave? BECAUSE OF THE NOISE
14. The house WHERE I LIVE is large WHICH house? WHERE I LIVE
15. Do it LIKE THIS. How do you do it? LIKE THIS
16. Come WHEN I CALL. WHEN do you come? WHEN I CALL
17. My father is IN THE NAVY. WHERE is my father? IN THE NAVY
18. JACK went UP THE HILL. WHO? JACK
  WHERE DID HE GO? UP THE HILL


(REPEAT ALL EXERCISES AT LEAST 3 TIMES.)
