There was a Presbyterian minister named John Moorhead who was friend of the Wheatley family. He had a slave who was an artist named Scipio. They arranged for him to paint a portrait of me. I even wrote a poem that was dedicated to him.

Phillis Wheatley An engraving of this picture was made for the book and the picture was hung over the living-room fireplace in the Wheatley home. I was told that Mrs. Wheatley would often proudly point to it when visitors came by. "See!" she was heard to say, "Look at my Phillis!"
