I was again taken back to the slave quarters where my mother started nursing me once more. I had a big hole in my head and most folks thought that I would not make. My mother had already lost two of her daughters, who had been sold down south, and was determined not to lose me. Many of the slaves come to look in on me. They knew of a lot of slaves who had done things to help themselves. But they said that they admired what I did was because it was done to help somebody else. They wondered among themselves, "Where did she get the such nerve, courage and daring?" They all knew that Master Brodas would try to sell me now. He actually did try. But I was such a pitiful sight, everybody who saw me thought I was worthless.

At first I used to pray to the Lord to change his heart. But when I heard that he was planning to sell me and my brothers down south in the next chain gang, I prayed to the Lord to do away with him. I often thought of running away, but the injury I had caused me to have sudden blackouts. I could be talking and just pass out unconscious. When I woke up after a while, I would start talking again just where I left off.
