Another story that kept being told that year was the one about Nat Turner. He was a slave During the harvest of that same year Master put on a corn husking bee. He invited other slave owners to bring their slaves to participate. During the bee I noticed that one of them was acting quiet. Slave owners didn't like to see quiet slaves. They thought they might be plotting to run away or something. I could just feel that something was about to happen.
After awhile the slave started moving away and then started running across the field. When the overseer saw him he started running after him. Then I ran after them too. The slave ran into a store and the overseer followed him in there and threatened to whip him. But he couldn't get any help to tie him up. Then he bolted out of the door. And when I saw him do that, I jumped into the doorway and his owner couldn't get at him. He turned and grabbed a metal doorstop and threw it at him. The doorstop missed him and struck me in the head and knocked me unconscious.
