Although I was shy as a young girl, I liked to sing and watch the birds flying free, and the squirrels playing, and the clouds drifting slowly across the sky. But the old lady who used to watch over us kids warned me that my carefree days of childhood would soon come to an end.
When I was around six years old, a lady drove up to the big house in a wagon. She was married to a man named James Cook who was a hunter and trapper. She wanted to hire one of Master Brodas' slaves. She didn't have much money so she said that one of the little girls would do. The next thing I knew I was on the back of that wagon making the trip to that lady's house. It was smaller than the "big house." The lady was a weaver and she put me to work helping her. I had to wind yarn and catch thread. I was not good at it at all. And the house was full of lint and fuzz. I was constantly sneezing and dropping the yarn.
