Mr. Scriver was an upstanding member of the Dutch Reformed church. In 1810, about a year after Mau-mau's death, he sold me for $70 to his fellow parishioner, Mr. John Dumont.
Master Dumont was used to slaves, but his wife was only used to hired folks.
She could not understand why slaves did not work as eagerly as people who worked for hire. The slaves really had nothing to gain by doing inspired work.
However, to me Master Dumont was next to God. I believed in my youthful ways that submitting to him was being true to God.
