I only stayed with Mr. Scriver for about a year and a half. Besides being a fisherman, Mr. Scriver owned a tavern and a large farm. I was about twelve years old then. The tavern served fishermen and their class of people. When I worked there I was exposed to rude uneducated people who used foul language. I even picked up some of it myself.
However, on the whole those people were kind and honest.
The Scriver's did not care for their farm too much. It was a wild outdoors kind of place. When I worked there I had to hoe corn, gather herbs and roots for making beer, and carry fish. All in all, it was an improvement over the treatment I received at the Nealys' place.
