I wished that that I had a chance to talk to God like my mother taught me. It could have been spared that beating. However, after that I began to pray to God to send my father to me to help me out.

By-and-by he did come, and I got a chance to tell him my troubles. He promised to try and help me. It was known that slaves would often ask masters that they were kind to buy some of their friends and family.

My father had talked to a fisherman named Mr. Scriver about me. He came by and asked me if I wanted to go and live with him. Of course I said eagerly said yes. So he bought me for one hundred and five dollars.

Fortunately, for me I only had to stay with the Nealys for about a year.
