I was about nine years old when Master Charles died. When I saw my mother crying, I asked her, "Mau-mau what makes you cry?" She answered by saying, "Oh my child, I am thinking of your brothers and sisters that have been sold away from me." She went on to describe once again the circumstances. She realized, you see, what was going to happen.
After that, in the evenings when her work was finished, Mau-mau would gather Peter and me. She would sit with us under the open sky and talk with us about the only Being who could protect and help us.
"There is a God who hears and sees you," she would tell us. "Where does he live?" we would ask. "He lives in the sky," she would answer. "Whenever you are beaten, cruelly treated, or fall into any trouble, you must ask Him to help you. He will always hear you and help you."
