My grandmother gave me lots of kind and tender loving care. It was some time before I realized that I was a slave. I grew very fond of her little cabin and the area around it. Before long I learned that my grandmother's little cabin along with herself and all the little children there, including me, belonged to a man who lived some distance away know as "Old Master." And what was even sadder was learning that I would be sent away as soon as I was old enough. I learned that Old Master had several farms and was the chief clerk and butler on the home plantation for Colonel Lloyd. And that he had overseers and slaves on his own farm and gave orders to the overseers of Colonel Lloyd.
