Those words had a lasting effect on me. They shed light on a painful mystery that my youthful mind had struggled in vain to understand—the white man's power to hold the black man in slavery.

"Very well," thought I. "Knowledge unfits a child to be a slave." I now understood the direct pathway to freedom and I would not rest until I got it.
