And for some reason she didn't like me. Once, when she was mad at me, she withheld my portion of food. And told me that she would starve me to death. However, I was able to find some grains of corn and just as I was about to eat them, I heard a familiar voice. My Mother! She had walked 12 miles just to see me. I can't tell you what seeing her at a time like this meant to me. When I told her what Aunt Katy had said to me, there was deep and tender pity for me in her face. At the same time there was a fiery look at Aunt Katy. She exchanged the corn I had for a large ginger cake. And gave Aunt Katy a lecture that I shall never forget. That night I learned as I had never learned before that I was not only a child, but somebody's child.
