There was one other Black boy in school. I was disappointed that he was not a good student and eventually dropped out. I was not having any trouble and often bested my other schoolmates academically. I was determined to make them sweat to be better than me.

Among the school's activities that I participated in were the school's plays and its short-lived newspaper.

But there was a lot that could be learned outside of the schoolhouse. I particular I can recall the bookstore in the little shop that contained the village post office in the rear.

A Welshman named Johnny Morgan ran the bookstore. He took an interest in me and allowed me to look at the magazines and periodicals before he put them up for sell.
