Her husband soon joined us. Their names were Andrew and Mariah Watkins. He was a handyman who was away from home all day. She was a laundress and midwife who delivered babies for all races.

They offered me work in turn for a place to stay. She fixed me some breakfast and shooed me off to school.

"I'm George Carver from Diamond Grove," I told the colored man standing in the door. "Well, I'm Steven Frost," he said. "I'm the teacher here at Lincoln School." I felt good to be in a colored school with a colored teacher. I didn't even mind that it was so crowded. For there seem to be about seventy-five students sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in that little log cabin.
