I went to the store and finished my business there. However, on my return home I observed a sight that had a bigger impact on me than everything else I witnessed there. I saw a whole lot of little colored children pouring out of a building. There was also a colored man standing in the doorway.

"Is this a school for colored children?" I asked. "It sure is," he said. "Why aren't you in school?" I answered him meekly that I lived in Diamond Grove.

I didn't know whether to cry or fly all the way home. Uncle Mose would let me go all right. He always said that I was as free as a bird. But what would it mean to go there? I would have to leave the safety and security of the farm, and all that I was familiar and comfortable with.
