A man stopped me and asked me who did I belong to. I told him Mr. Moses Carver. He said that it was a good thing that he knew him. He told me where to find the store I wanted to go to. But he also told me not to look at him or his horse, and to keep my eyes on the ground.

Nobody had ever treated me that way before. But I found a trick to keep on observing the people and things. I would pretend I was window shopping and observe things through their reflections.
