Once a neighbor lady asked me to look over her roses that weren't doing well. When I saw them I asked her for a shovel and dug them up and planted them on the south side of her house. I told her that roses really liked sunshine. She thanked me and gave me a three-cent piece and invited me inside. There I saw something I had never seen before-a picture. I was determined to learn how to draw and paint. I believed that if I put my mind to it, I could learn it. Furthermore, I was really interested in furthering my education. However, when my brother Jim and I tried to enroll in the school, we were turned away. Although we could play with the neighborhood white kids, we were not allowed to go to school or Sunday school with them.
