One day, some bushwhackers men kidnapped my mother, brother and one of my sisters and me. I was just a babe in arms at the time. Mr. Carver went after us and was only able to save my brother. He sent someone with one of his fine racing horses worth about $300 to trade for us. However, they would not let my mother and sister go. But I was so sick they didn't see any value in me. So they only sent me back. In the meantime, my other two sisters died and were buried. My brother James and I were left to grow up together on the Carver's farm. We called them "Uncle Mose" and "Aunt Sue." My brother and I often shared each other's sorrows.
