When I was about fifteen or sixteen, I finished my studies at the mission in Maysville. I then returned to the cotton fields. However, I would still work in my community to keep the interest in education alive. And I continued to train myself so that I could be of service to others.

I can remember that October day when Miss Wilson came back to our farm field. This time she had Mr. Simmons, a Negro man who had done a lot for our people, with her. They told my parents that they had been sending out literature about the work being done at our mission school in Maysville.
